#PinkDifferentJen is the first hashtag Jennifer Abessira created, and it’s a parody of Steve Jobs’ “Think Different.” Abessira would often view art online, and the common denominator that remained in her mind was the color pink. She began covering areas she didn’t like in images she had with pink through her mobile phone, like a beautiful bandage. The covering and hiding were for her a means to treat and change the image as she wished. Over time, hiding the faces of figures in pink, adding a pink sun or a pink palm tree became her signature. Abessira rarely creates drawing works, and this is one of her few. The work responds to a Picasso drawing that Abessira found during a period when she wore an eye patch due to an injury from a car accident. She decided to add her pink signature to Picasso’s facial drawing with one eye, creating a second eye covered with an eye patch. The addition of the pink scribble was her way of claiming the image, identifying with the experience of having only one eye in use, a playful expression of the artist’s condition.
