Jennifer Abessira
A photographer who sees herself more as an image creator, Abessira examines the evolution of contemporary imagery. She holds an MFA from Bezalel, a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, and a bachelor’s degree in French literature and French history. Working between Tel Aviv and Paris, Abessira engages with visual quotations, appropriations, and re-photographing of existing photographic products (postcards, catalogs, albums) and images found online. She constructs a colorful art historical “shatnez” (mixture) as part of Western culture’s building blocks, while simultaneously creating an expanded reference point to her private world of influences, affinities, and preferences collected through a browsing mentality.
