יעל מר ושי אלקלעי- סטודיו RAW EDGES

Mer and Alkelaey, professional and personal partners are both graduates of the industrial design department in Bezelel (2002) with masters from the RCA in London, under Ron Arad that served as the head of the department. Since, they reside in London, where they established Raw Edges, a design company with a name deriving from their belief of using materials that are not over processed. This approach is part of the DNA of their work that is colorful and filled of movement, humor and a dimension of playfulness and childhood memories.
Mer and Alkelaey are both curious about the creation process and always try new things, “everything to avoid boredom” in their words. They are proud in crafting new typologies to enrich their daily environment and enjoying challenges of materials and methods of production that breaks old notions and concepts. Their work moves in the range between conceptual design to commercial design. One of the most known designs of the two, one that put them on the map, is the dresser called Attack, a design they created in 2009, a stack of drawers put on one another randomly. This item has awarded them the Edida award and awarded them with the future promising designers in Miami and Basel that year. They design furniture, tiles, carpets, and other objects that are part of collections for leading brands like CAPELLINI, GOLRAN, MUTINA, ESTABLISHED & SONS and more. Their Fish bone-inspired tile design was chosen by Stella McCartney and received positive attention. They also take part in conceptual art installations like Islands, an installation created with “Ceaser Stone” company in 2014 at Milan, where they showed their interpretation for tiles, islands, and surfaces around the house. Since they became more known they collected a long, impressive list of awards. Their designs are regularly shown in MOMA NYC, VITRA design museum and also Hulun design museum.
