DOSHI LEVIEN - ניפה דושי וג'ונתן לויאן

Designers Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien are the owners of a London-based studio named after them, Levian Doshi. They are design partners and partners in their personal life. Doshi, born in Mumbai in 1971, grew up in Delhi and studied furniture design at the Design of Institute National in Ahmedbad, India, a school that its curriculum based on a manifest by the adored, iconic designers, Charles and Ray Eems. As a graduate of this institute Doshi arrived in London and followed Jasper Morrison advice to pursue her studies in the RCA, where she met Levian. Levian, born in Scotland in 1972 started his way in cabinet making and continued to industrial design. He got his certification from RCA in the department of furniture design. In 2000, after the two got married and worked in the field for several years, some of those years with the leading designer Ross Lovegrove, they launched their own studio that represents their outlook of the world – a perception that combines an intelligent sensitivity for visual culture, stemming from Doshi’s childhood in India along with Levian industrial finesse and his skills as a creator that is highly familiar with different materials. The two believed that design is not only “stuff”, it’s a way to look at life. The studio’s designs (Their first client was none other than Tom Dickson, Habitat’s art director at the time) are based on constant research of how to combine both worlds and pursue a combination of culture, technology, narrative and craft. They are cross disciplinaries and take part of designing for the world’s leading brands: Capellini, Swarovski, B&B, Nani Marquina, HAY, Camper and more. Their work gets constant press and magazine attention in the professional design world and they achieved various awards and excellence honors by leading establishments in and out the design world. Just to cherry-pick a few: Wallpaper magazine highlighted their work, an award for being the “Designers of Tomorrow” by Hewitt Cooper museum, Best designer for 2014 by Edida, an award presented as part of the international furniture exhibition in Milan, given for design excellence. They also received the same award in 2017 for the outdoor furniture category for Cala, a couch they designed for the leading garden furniture Kettal.
