Konstantin Grcic
Born in Munich, Germany in 1965. Studied cabinet making in Parnham college in Durest, England and later continued to study design in the royal art school in London. After completed his studies in 1990, he started working in Jasper Morison’s studio. After several years he returned to Munich to open his studio, named “Konstantin Grcic Industrial design” aka KGID. The studio was dedicated to developing furniture, household items and lighting items for Europe most sought after design firms. In 2002, he developed the “One” series for Magis, a collection of aluminum furniture with an innovative, new approach for material. Konstantin Grcic said the aluminum chair from the collection (One chair) is built like soccer – a collection of flat pieces tied together to create a three-dimensional shape. His products are industrial, minimal, and simple. The role of the product is defined with human terms in a design that combines formal accuracy with a great sense of humor. He described his own style as “Contemporary, feasible, realistic” and stated that his all-time favorite product he designed is the MayDay lamp he created for Flos. When he was asked in an interview what was his dream job as a child and if he actually enjoys his current line of work, he answered: “Since I’m a kid, creating things is the thing that gives me the most pleasure, I love my work because I get to design 3D products in my studio, so I turned into what I wanted to do as a kid, a creator of things. The difference is that when I was a child I wasn’t familiar with the word design.”
