Maaraten Bass

Born in Ahrensburg, Germany in 1978. When he was only a year old, his family moved to Netherlands, where he grew up. When he graduated from high school in 1996, he was accepted to the prestige design academy in Aldenhoven. While completing his studies he already designed the knuckle candle holder that was manufactured commercially. In the year 2000, he studied in Politecnico, Milan. In June 2002 he graduated from the design academy in Aldenhoven. By the time he finished his school, he already had two prominent designs to show for: A collection of burnt furniture called Smoke and a sophisticated sun clock that shows time using shade. Those were both nominated for the design awards Smeets Melkweg and Ren. Marcel Wanders chose 3 items from the smoke collection as part of the MOOOI collection and it was acknowledged as a collection with cultural importance by museums, art collectors and the design crowd. In May 2004, Bass displayed the smoke collection in an exhibit named after him at Moss, New York. The monumental exhibit was named ‘Where There’s Smoke…’ and included 25 unique items – each burnt with a torch and sealed with semi-transparent epoxy.
Bas Deb Herder has been collaborating with Maaraten since 2005 and now responsible for Maaraten’s production line. Together, they formed Herder Den & Bass that allows Bass to produce his furniture in larger quantities.
