RONAN AND ERWAN BOUROULLEC

Brothers-designers Roman and Erwan Bouroullec were born in the Britanny region in north-west France. Ronan, the oldest was born in 1971 graduated from design studies and Erwan, born in 1976, studied art, together they became a duo working in their own studio in Paris. They have different personalities – Ronan is driven by passion and Erwan is more calculated, a handyman that loves craftmanship. Together, they challenge each other. They are both persistent and dedicated to their work and produce a line of design that include objects, spaces, exhibits and art installations. In 2013, they published a book with over 800 drafts and sketches, all created by them since 2005. Their first debut in the upper league of designers occurred with Capellini brand and later, with Issey Miyake, a fashion designer that used their services to design his own design boutique. Since then, the sky is the limit for those two and they designed for brands such as VITRA; MUTINA; HANSGROHE; ARTEK; NANI MARQUINA; FLOS, SAMSUNG, CAPELLINI and more. They’re innovators that mentioned Eames as their inspiration and his use of technology, as well as Italian designers from the seventies and eighties. Their generation of designers was prone to break old perspectives and they also created new typologies. They believe “Great design does not stand alone, it has to be intelligent and has a context to it.” They take into account aesthetics and technology but also consider space, user experience and situations they interpret differently according to their vision. For example: The AIM lighting system they designed for The Plus company was meant to break the fixation of hanging lights and used the cable of the lights, something that is usually neglected, as a main part of the design. In 2015, the brothers showcased the installation “17 dividers” a special exhibit made especially to this space. In the project they combined aluminum, glass, ceramic, and textile that went through traditional processing in modern technology. They work has been part od museum collections all over the world and they won multiple awards world-wide throughout the years.
