SEBASTIAN HERKNER

Born in Bad Mergentheim, Germany in 1981 and a graduate of industrial design studies at the HFG university for arts and design. His tendency towards product design started in an early age and led him to design studies. While in school, he spent time with designer Stella Macrtny that helped shape his aesthetic perception and strengthen his attraction to materials, colors, and textures. He established his studio in Offenbach, Germany in 2006 even before he graduated from Offenbach school and he stayed to teach in the same university for several years after. Despite his young age, he quickly created a name for himself as a promising, talented young designer with a great future and received a reputation for having a designer that treats cultural contrasts along with advanced technology and innovation with traditional craft methods and technics – all those different aspects in his design are the ones that created his well-rounded design style. He keeps away from trends and believes that designer possess a great responsibility towards the public, the industry and the way humans interact with each other. His inspiration stems from authentic material and hand work and he describes good design as: “A combination of functionality, story-telling, integrity, honesty and truth that derives from using quality materials.” He also designs spaces, art exhibits and museums exhibitions and his work as product design includes furniture design, lighting fixture designs and tools and accessories he designs for a variety of international companies such as, Dedon, Fontana Arte, Flos, Rosenthal, Classicon, and more. He took part in a long line of exhibitions and the list of his awards is extensive, some of them are the Excellence Award by Edida for best designer as well as leading design magazines that chose him over and over. He also received many awards for the Banjool couch he designed for Moroso for their Ma’Afrique collection.
