TORD BOONTJE
Born in Netherlands in 1968 and currently living in London, where his design studio is located, one he established in 1996 and he now shares with his spouse, a glass artist. He graduated his bachelor design degree in the prestige design academy in Eindhoven, Netherlands and continued to his Masters in RCA in London. In 2005, he moved to France but returned to London when he was chosen to serve in the challenging position as head of the design department in the RCA, a position he held for four years. He’s a versatile, fruitful designer with a playful, experimental approach to design that embeds romantic style with contemporary design. He designs different products: furniture, light fixtures, jewelry, textile, carpets and more. By his perspective, he’s interested in “designing exciting, emotional items with a story behind them”. In the base of his unconventional work stands functionality, humane-social attitude, and artistic dimension. His work combines traditional craft with advanced technologies and he follows cultural inspirations in Africa and central/south America in his pursue of quality traditional artisanship and handwork as well as collaborates with local arts. Years of working with Alexander McQueen brought him closer to the worlds of fashion and textile and the influence on his design is shows through his use of color, motion dimensions, decorative elements and more. He created an impressive art installation with McQueen that was shown in Milan furniture exhibit and showcased furniture that were covered by clothes and created an illusion and character. His designs are in the range between commercial production to limited collection and one-piece items and are displayed in museums all over the world: MOMA NYC, Hewitt Cooper, A&V in London, Gruninger in Netherlands and others in Australia, Scandinavia and more. Throughout his career he created designs for brands such as Swarovski, Philips, HP, Moroso, Nani Marquina and more and won a long line of awards and prizes such as designer of the year by many institutes and magazine, the textile innovation award for the clan IMM exhibit, Dot red award for excellence in product design (twice) and many more.
